Transmath Newsletter no. 7 -------------------------- Dear All, Transmath version 1.3 is the final version of the product funded by TLTP phase 1. It is available to UK higher education at cost. This means it's free if you can download it via ftp (see below). For those of you without access to ftp, you can order a set of disks for 23.50 pounds including VAT and postage. Modules Available ----------------- Version 1.3 contains 16 modules covering 9 topics. There are 64 exercises, 27 of which require Mathematica; the remaining 37 do not need Mathematica at all and can still provide intelligent feedback to incorrect answers. A detailed syllabus is available from our ftp server. Future Plans ------------ At present, we are funded by Leeds University and our aim is to reach a self-financing position in a few years time. This means that we do work on industrial contracts as well as Transmath. We are currently applying to TLTP for further funding; to support Transmath and for a new collaborative project to integrate video with courseware. We are also talking to Wolfram Inc. about including a cut-down version of Mathematica in Transmath. We have received many queries about a maple version and a foreign language version of Transmath. We do have plans for these but they depend very much on whether we can find a source of funds. FTP and WWW ----------- For security reasons, the full version of Transmath 1.3 can no longer be accessed by anonymous ftp. It can still be downloaded by ftp but you will need to contact us to get a password. Our ftp server (via anonymous or otherwise) also contains old newsletters, a user guide, a syllabus and installation and configuration guides. A demo version is still available by anonymous ftp (also via the WWW). ftp to caliban.leeds.ac.uk Type anonymous when you are prompted for a username and give your e-mail address as the password. **** Remember to change to binary mode before downloading the files.**** Our WWW address is: http://caliban.leeds.ac.uk Sui Cheng --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Sui Cheng e-mail: sui@amsta.leeds.ac.uk Dr. Amanda Kelly e-mail: a.d.kelly@leeds.ac.uk Dr. Simon Maunder e-mail: simon@amsta.leeds.ac.uk Department of Applied Maths University of Leeds tel: (+44) 113 233 5174 Leeds LS2 9JT fax: (+44) 113 242 9925 U.K. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
