Transmath Newsletter no. 6 -------------------------- Dear All, TLTP project 15 (which we are part of) is now drawing to a close and this release of Transmath (version 1.3) fulfills our obligation to TLTP. We will still be supporting the material by supplying bug fixes etc. New Modules ----------- There are 3 new modules in this release (version 1.3): Trigonometry: Pythagoras' Theorem, Right-angled triangles, Trig functions and the Sine and Cosine Rules. Complex Numbers: Imaginary numbers, Argand diagram, Modulus, Argument De Moivre's Theorem and roots of a complex number. Numerical Methods: Root finding, Numerical Integration and Euler's method. Please send us feedback on Transmath, particularly on bugs, mistakes and content. User Guide ---------- A user guide for Transmath has been compiled and is available as a word document from our FTP server. It is in the pub/transmath/ directory. Please read the file userdoc.txt for more details. Transmath at Leeds ------------------ Last year, Transmath was used by two engineering departments (Civil and Mining) to supplement the teaching of mathematics to their first year students. The strategy adopted by Mining (supervised timetabled sessions) was more successful than that used by Civil (open access). This year, apart from Mining and Civil, 5 other departments (Electrical Eng., Mechanical Eng., Food Science, Textiles and Mathematics (Foundation level)) have stated their interest in using Transmath with students. This makes a total of 7 departments at Leeds University who are officially using the Transmath system. (Since Transmath is available to all students, we are also logging many users who are from departments that are not using Transmath). All 7 departments will be adopting the time-tabled approach and will be recording the students' progress through the year. This year, the Mining Engineering department has fully integrated Transmath into their teaching strategy; students now receive 15 credits for successfully completing the Transmath course.
