gap Macintosh Port by Burkhard Hofling Burkhard.Hofling@maths.anu.edu.au gap is a recent Macintosh port of the powerful algebraic package GAP. The interface has one window in which commands are typed and results are displayed. An extensive on-line help feature is included, and queries to the help feature result in a Help window being opened and pertinent information displayed. gap features arbitrary precision arithmetic with data manipulation in a powerful programming environment. A selection from the table of contents of the help manual provide a good idea of what can be done with gap: The Programming Language, Environment, Domains, Rings, Fields, Groups, Operations of Groups, Vector Spaces, Integers, Number Theory, Rationals, Cyclotomics, Gaussians, Subfields of Cyclotomic Fields, Unknowns, Finite Fields, Polynomials, Permutations, Permutation Groups, Words in Abstract Generators, Finitely Presented Groups, Words in Finite Polycyclic Groups, Finite Polycyclic Groups, Lists, Sets, Boolean Lists, Strings and Characters, Ranges, Vectors, Row Spaces, Matrices, Matrix Rings, Matrix Groups, Group Libraries, Mappings, Homomorphisms, Booleans, Records, Combinatorics, Tables of Marks, Character Tables, Generic Character Tables, Characters, Maps and Parametrized Maps, Character Table Libraries, Weyl Groups and Hecke Algebras. The program was tested on a PowerMac with no difficulties running. -------------------------------------------------------------- Location in Mathematics Archives: Anonymous FTP: /mac/discreteMath /mac/linearAlgebra /mac/modernAlgebra /mac/numberTheory Gopher: (First select "Software" then "Macintosh software arranged by subjects") discreteMath / Recent Macintosh port of GAP (Groups, Algrithms, Programming) linearAlgebra / Recent Macintosh port of GAP (Groups, Algrithms, Programming) modernAlgebra / Recent Macintosh port of GAP (Groups, Algrithms, Programming) numberTheory / Recent Macintosh port of GAP (Groups, Algrithms, Programming) --------------------------------------------------------------
