GroupAnalyzer.sea.hqx Group Analyzer ver 5.0 and 5.01 Dr. Paul G. Glenn Department of Mathematics Catholic University of America Washington, DC 20064 glenn@cua.edu This program is designed as an aid for a sophomore/junior level course for mathematics majors usually called "Abstract Algebra." It is a convenient tool for experimenting with groups. Several groups are included, and there are supplementary programs to construct (and save to file) different groups. The user opens a group then can work on individual elements or on subsets of the elements. The group operations include subgroup generated by a subset, the normalizer, centralizer, and normal closure of a subgroup, conjugation, display of the conjugacy classes of the elements of a given subset, raising all elements of a given subset to a given power, multiplying arbitrary subsets, and inverting elements of a subset. There are also structural calculations. These include the commutator subset, all conjugacy classes, the (left) cosets of a specified subgroup, the center of the group, the set of all elements having a specified order, and more. The "working area" is a stack, and appropriate stack operations can be performed from menu bar selections. There also a feature that allows for creation of a journal as you perform the experiments. Documentation includes a collection of activities, a tutorial and a guide, all in TeX format. The program was tested on a PowerBook 5300ce running system 8.5.1 and no difficulties were encountered. -------------------------------------------------------------- Location in Mathematics Archives: Anonymous FTP: /mac/modernAlgebra Gopher: (First select "Software" then "Macintosh software arranged by subjects") Modern Algebra / GroupAnalyzer --------------------------------------------------------------
