NonEuclid.4.0.sea.hqx NonEuclid is a "sketch pad" for the Poincare Model of Hyperbolic Geometry. At the outset, all that is drawn is a circle. Using choices from the menu, points, line segments, lines, angles, perpendiculars, circles, intersection points, and midpoints can be constructed. As each item is drawn, relevant information about it appears in the margin. Once figures are drawn, the program will perform measurements on them including distance between points, size of angles, and areas of triangles. There is a menu of "What to Do" items, each of which is a series of questions for the student to answer using the program. There are also four pages of on-line help. Clearly, this is a program with the student in mind. Color is supported. Menus are missing the usual Macintosh amenities of keyboard shortcuts, and the screen is not dynamically updated, though there is a redraw menu selection. It would also be nice to be able to move existing points and have the figures related to that point move accordingly. In this way, students could see even better, the non-homogeneous nature of the model. With the variety of implementations available, the program should run on nearly any Macintosh except the new PowerMacs. (Even with SoftwareFPU the program did not run.) Tested under System 7.1 in 32-bit mode with no difficulties. -------------------------------------------------------------- Location in Mathematics Archives: Anonymous FTP: /mac/geometry Gopher: (First select "Software" then "Macintosh software arranged by subjects") Geometry / NonEuclid --------------------------------------------------------------
