SyMan.sea.hqx SyMan Roy Wood Silicon Angst Software 122 Britannia Avenue London, Ontario CANADA N6H 2J5 (416) 694-5927 SyMan is a simple symbolic manipulator for the Macintosh. Its focus is on high school level algebra. The accompanying documentation includes a series of lessons that take the user through most of the features of the program. The topics of the lessons include solving linear equations, graphing rational functions, solving systems of linear equations, factoring polynomials, solving quadratic equations, completing the square, sine curves (amplitude, period, phase shift, translations), and transformations of functions. Some of the menu selections are simplify, collect, expand, reduce, factor, switch order, and substitute. Graphing ranges from graphing points satisfying equations to drawing lines by freehand. There is a zoom feature for the graphing. There is also, in keeping with the current interest in iterating functions, a main menu selection for iteration, with options to iterate on two variables, four variables, compute the orbit diagram and compute a Julia set. Each of these allows for the user to modify the parameters and functions involved. There is a 15 page user manual in Word format in addition to the lessons. The program was tested on a PowerMac with no difficulty running. -------------------------------------------------------------- Location in Mathematics Archives: Anonymous FTP: /mac/collegeAlgebra /mac/precalculus Gopher: (First select "Software" then "Macintosh software arranged by subjects") College Algebra / SyMan (Symbolic Manipulator) Precalculus / SyMan (Symbolic Manipulator) --------------------------------------------------------------
