Moore, Mafori DeKalb College Gwinnett Campus 1301 Atkinson Rd. Lawrenceville, GA 30243 imoore@dekalb.dc.peachnet.edu Mathematics for Careers The text that I am developing is for the General Mathematics course at DeKalb College. This course covers three basic units - Solving equations, personal finance, probability & statistics. It is designed for students seeking an Associate in Arts and Science degree in one of our career programs - fire science technology or interpreter training. It also serves students in our dual degree programs with local technical schools who work toward a certificate in their career area then take the additional course work at DeKalb to complete an AAS degree. The technical school career areas which are served by this course include Radiologic Technology, Physical Therapy Assistant, Respiratory Therapy Technology, Marketing Management, Fashion Merchandising, and Hotel/Restaurant Management. Developing in the MathKit/Toolbook environment, I am attempting to cover the basic units while including applications that are specific to some of the careers mentioned above. The level of the mathematics required and sought for these students is neither rigorous nor demanding. I have found that the MathKit/Toolbook environment facilitates the graphics based, hypertext development mode that is suitable at this level. .
