Dick Lane University of Montana Department of Mathematical Sciences Missoula, MT 59812 lane@selway.umt.edu First Year Calculus in Mathcad I am writing first-year calculus modules and projects using MathCAD. These materials integrate graphic, numeric, and symbolic approaches. Provoking active learning within the interactive math text environment is one of my objectives. I also try to encourage my students to reflect upon their learning, especially through their writings with and for other students. As I proceed, one of my immediate concerns is to improve the synergy between traditional texts on paper and interactive ones on a computer screen. I also want to understand what sorts of student writing are useful --- my documents which involve lots of interaction are not apt to be good models for student reports about their learning or work on open-ended projects. .
