Barry Brunson (jointly with Claus Ernst) Western Kentucky University Department of Mathematics Bowling Green, KY 42101 bbrunson@wku.edu Algebra,Trigonometry&Mathematica We are writing interactive courseware at the level of college algebra and trigonometry as the name, Algebra,Trigonometry&Mathematica, suggests, on Davis, Porta, and Uhl's Calculus&Mathematica. The courseware will constitute a complete course, not an electronic supplement to a traditional printed text. The central focus will be on functions; a student who successfully completes the course should have a solid understanding of the concept of a function, together with a wealth of practical experience in working with a wide variety of functions. Modeling and serious applications using real-world data will receive special emphasis. Additional features include data analysis and curve fitting, with attention to statistical abuses. Various projects will be included, completion of which will require active data collection on the part of students, either individually or in groups. Student writing will be a large part of the course. As with Calculus&Mathematica, an appropriate level of skill in hand manipulations will be ensured through "literacy quizzes". .
