  1. Exponential Functions

    Objectives:
    After working through the Readings, Web Materials and the Homework, the student should be able to
    • understand the definition of the exponential function;
    • understand the definition of the number e;
    • be able to sketch the graph of an exponential function.

    Readings:
    • Sections 1.5 of Stewart.

  2. Rules of Differentiation

    Objectives:
    After working through the Readings, Web Materials and the Homework, the student should be able to
    • understand the derivation of some elementary rules for derivatives and apply these rules.
    • give examples of functions that fail to be differentiable;
    • detect graphically a function that fails to be differentiable;
    • understand the relationship between continuity and differentiablility.

    Readings:
    • Section 2.8 and 3.1 of Stewart.

  3. Product and Quotient Rule

    Objectives:
    After working through the Readings, Web Materials and the Homework, the student should be able to
    • understand the derivation of the product and quotient rules;
    • apply these rules.

  4. Chain Rule

    Objectives:
    After working through the Readings, Web Materials and the Homework, the student should be able to
    • understand the chain rule;
    • apply the chain rule;
    • understand how the chain rule is used to find the tangent line to parametric curves.
