Infometrix, Inc (1991): Einsight 3.0 (2200 Sixth Ave, Suite 833, Seattle Washington 98121) [STATISTICS, DOS] Einsight is a powerful statistical package that is designed to tackle the problem of extracting useful information from multivariate data. This program is an exploratory data analysis system that calculates and then graphically displays patterns of association in multivariate data sets. This type of analysis is useful for life scientists because so much of the data collected in nature is not univariate. Einsight uses a windows like interface that is easy to learn and understand. The main input device is the mouse. Once your data is plugged in, (and you can import from many different software platforms) all you need to do is point and click. This is makes it easy for even the novice user to be up and running in little time. The graphics in Einsight will allow you to display multiple windows with individual tables or tables and multiple plots in single windows. There is an icon bar located on the right hand side of the screen that makes the choices easy. One option allows the user to spin the 3D plots to any direction desired. Any window can display any graphic which is appropriate for the data object in that window. For example, a scatter plot containing two scores from principal components can be changed to a rotating 3D plot by making that window active and choosing that option from the menu bar. The windows can also be resized by pulling on the mouse. This makes it easy to see in greater detail the data set on which you are currently working. Einsight has dendrograms, line plots, multiplot, and as mentioned before 3D rotating plots. The reason for all of these graphs is to aid you in interpreting your data and to determine if there is any underlying structure that is not apparent from a less in depth examination. This is the reason for the four windows with multiple graphs. The software prods you to explore your data and then move in on the relationships that may exist. One aspect of data analysis that Einsight is very helpful with is of identifying outliers. Because of the versatility of the graphing, deciding if a sample is representative or not is easy. The software has a walkthrough that teaches this skill. Einsight was easy to install and should not give any problems. However it appears to run very well on a 386 with no math co-processor. The only problem at this time seems to be speed. A math co-processor is recommended for those of you who can't bear to wait. The learning curve with this software is short, most should be able to be productive after just a short time. One of the high points of this software is that you do not have to be a math wizard to understand the relationships that the software is showing. This gives the researcher more power over his or her own work. There wasn't any problem to speak of with this software. This is an old version and one would bet that improvements have been made, but this reviewer found Einsight very practical and easy to use. REVIEWER: Aaron Peacock, December 1995.
