ABSTRACT

The paper describes a probability and statistics course taught via the Internet. Students meet for an orientation, midterm and final. Otherwise, the course is conducted on the Internet. The author discusses characteristics of learners likely to succeed in the course. She shares thoughts on learner's cognitive abilities and teaching novices statistics in an introductory course. She relates the results of evaluations of the course and basic principles of teaching on the Internet. There is a special need to deal with ways of using mathematical symbols in Web-based materials. The paper concludes with a number of references including hotlinks to help other faculty develop Internet courses. The paper will be available in hard copy and via e-mail.
