ABSTRACT
This paper discusses the use of Maple V’s group and combinat packages in the
study of elementary abstract algebra or introductory group theory. The main focus of the
paper is to show how to introduce discovery learning into abstract algebra class and how
to use a laboratory approach to teach basic concepts of group theory with the help of
elementary group theory commands found in MAPLE V’s packages group and
combinat.
